Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety disorders we commonly treat include generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder and panic disorder. Generalized anxiety disorder is characterized by excessive and exaggerated worry about everyday life events. People with symptoms of generalized anxiety often tend to expect disaster and can't stop worrying about issues such as health, money, family, work, or school. Social anxiety is characterized by feeling excessive and unreasonable discomfort in social situations such as in school, at parties, at work, while shopping or eating with others, and so forth. Intense nervousness arises from a fear of being closely watched, judged, and criticized by others. Anxiety disorders we commonly treat include generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder and panic disorder. Obsessive compulsive disorder is associated with a drive for perfection, repetitive ideas about orderliness, worry that doors have not been locked or gas appliances have not been turned off, fears about the future, and a tendency to behave repetitively to reduce the irrational fear. Panic attacks are sudden feelings of terror that strike without warning. These attacks can occur at any time and can mimic the experience of having a heart attack. Often, people experience physical effects such as heart palpitations, muscle tension, fatigue, nausea, chest pain, shortness of breath, stomach aches, or headaches.
At Therapy West, we understand how debilitating anxiety can be. It can interfere with daily functioning, including work, school, social activities, and relationships. CBT, particularly behavioral practice and exposure, has been shown to be quite effective in treating anxiety symptoms and enabling young people to live more productive and enjoyable lives.
