Tourette's & Tic Disorders

Tourette’s and Tic Disorders

Tourette’s and Tic Disorders are a neurological impairment in which children and young adults engage in involuntary motor and/or vocal tics.   For many, these tics are developmental in nature and eventually dissipate during early to mid adolescence.   However, they can still cause social discomfort in the individual during these early years of life.

Habit reversal training is an effective treatment for Tourette's with good long-term results. Tourette’s and Tics can be treated with behavioral techniques, which are usually performed by a psychologist. A number of psychiatric medications have been shown to reduce tics, with limited side effects (e.g., pimozide and haliperidol). In addition, Habit Reversal Training (HRT), a form of behavior therapy, and also an effective treatment for reducing tics. HRT is conducted to teach individuals how to modify their tics into more socially appropriate movements. It is an effective treatment for Tourette's, with good long-term results.
